Author Interview: Alice Feeney

His & Hers is a twisty, smart, psychological thriller. A gripping tale of suspense, told by expertly-drawn narrators that will keep listeners guessing until the very end. We spoke with author Alice Feeney about the inspiration for the novel, her favorite bookstores in America, and more.

“Alice Fenney has done it again. His & Hers is a gripping psychological thriller that will keep you up at night. There are three POVs: Anna, a TV broadcaster; Jack—her ex-husband who also happens to be a detective; and the killer. I became entranced with all three personalities and found myself glued to their words which subtly dropped clues. As I tried to put the puzzle pieces together, I became more confused with the effort. This thriller is jam-packed with suspense and twists. It is the perfect book for a long flight—the time will fly by. The narration is superb.”

Please tell us a little bit about what inspired you to write this book and how this story took shape for you.

I always think books are a bit like children and authors aren’t allowed to have favorites, but I confess this is mine. His & Hers is about a BBC newsreader called Anna Andrews, and her ex-husband, DCI Jack Harper. Their paths cross for the first time since their divorce when she is sent to cover a murder he is investigating. Things get complicated when they both become suspects. I love the twist in this book, and writing two sides of the same story was great fun.

In two sentences or less, what’s something that might surprise Libro.fm listeners about your audiobook?

We had to record the His & Hers audiobook during lockdown, which meant lovely Richard Armitage had to narrate his parts of the novel in a home studio…his bathroom! You can see his reaction to the story on his Instagram page!

Have you listened to your own audiobook? If so, what struck you about the narration?

Yes, the audiobook is always one of my favorite parts of the publishing process! Stephanie Racine is wonderful and narrates all of my audiobooks, and Richard Armitage is the perfect Jack Harper. They both did an incredible job of bringing the story and my characters to life. The opening chapter of the His & Hers audiobook is so creepy and brilliant, it gives me goosebumps every time!

Are you an audiobook listener? If so, what are some of your favorite audiobooks?

Yes, I love listening to audiobooks! My favorite is On Writing by Stephen King. I love that he narrates it himself, and I’ve listened to it several times. It’s like listening to your favorite author giving you the best writing advice whenever you need to hear it.

What have independent bookstores and/or booksellers meant to you personally and professionally?

Seeing my books out in the world will never stop being special to me, and it always means so much when I see them in bookstores and get to meet wonderful booksellers. I was lucky enough to be in America for the launch of my book last year, and visited so many amazing indie bookstores. Some of my favorites were The Mysterious Bookshop in New York, Brookline Booksmith in Boston, and East City Bookshop in Washington, DC. You have some of the best independent bookshops in the world, and I hope to be able to come back and visit again soon.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with us?

I’d like to say a huge thank you to Libro.fm for choosing His & Hers as their Audiobook Club Pick for August! And thank you to everyone who has listened already or is about to. I hope you enjoy it!
