What is Libro.fm all about?

Libro.fm is the first audiobook company to allow you to purchase audiobooks directly through your local, independent bookstore. We’re based in Seattle, we’re independent, and we love everything about local bookstores. You can purchase audiobooks one at a time or become a member and support one of our 1,000+ partner bookstores each month. Learn more about us and how Libro.fm works.

Why should I buy audiobooks from Libro.fm instead of Audible?

Libro.fm audiobooks are DRM-free and you support a local bookstore with every purchase! Beyond that, we pay publishers fair rates and actively work to make a positive impact within our community. Libro.fm is a sustainable, local alternative to Audible.

How do you support bookstores?

We split the profits from your purchases with the independent bookstore of your choice. We also provide marketing materials, technical support, and free Audiobook Listening Copies (ALCs) to booksellers, and use our social media accounts to highlight booksellers and bookstores. We believe that independent bookstores are vital to our communities, and we want to see them thrive.

Can I return my audiobook?

Contact us at hello@libro.fm, and we’re happy to return an audiobook if you are unsatisfied with your purchase. We want you to be happy with your Libro.fm experience, so please reach out and let us know how we can help. We reserve the right to limit the number of exchanges and refunds allowed in order to prevent abuse of this policy.

Where is Libro.fm available?

While anyone can buy audiobooks à la carte and purchase gift memberships, traditional membership is currently available only to customers in the U.S. and Canada. Since publishers often restrict where certain audiobooks can be sold, you’ll be notified after you enter your credit card information if the audiobook is not available for purchase in your country (and of course, you won’t be charged should that be the case). You can search for audiobooks by country: Search here and select country availability.

The Libro.fm community includes listeners from all over the world, and in the future we plan to offer membership in more countries. Any issues getting an audiobook where you live? Shoot us an email at hello@libro.fm

Why don’t you have this author or that audiobook?

While Libro.fm has more than 150,000 audiobooks and more than 99% of all the New York Times bestsellers, there are a few titles that are unavailable because of exclusive licenses granted by audiobook publishers and authors to Amazon’s Audible. We are fiercely independent and oppose Amazon’s efforts to keep independent bookstores and others out of the audiobook business. We are actively working with publishers to make these titles available on Libro.fm and through independent bookstores. Read more about the harmful impact of Audible Exclusives. Please email us at hello@libro.fm to let us know if the audiobook you want is missing.

What is the difference between abridged and unabridged audiobooks?

An abridged audiobook is a more condensed or trimmed down version of an audiobook, while the unabridged audiobook is the full, original version. Sometimes audiobook publishers create abridged versions in order to make the audiobook more pleasant to listen to or to make them several hours shorter, which some people prefer. You’ll notice that we always specify whether each audiobook is abridged or unabridged along with how many hours long it is. Often we will have both versions available for purchase.

How do I select my favorite independent bookstore?

When you create your account, you’ll be able to select your favorite independent bookstore. If you already have an account but have not selected your bookstore, you can select from our partner stores or change your affiliation at any time.
