Meet a Bookseller: Bob Lingle

We are proud to introduce bookstore owner and bookseller Bob Lingle of Off the Beaten Path Bookstore in Lakewood, NY.

How did you get into bookselling?

My first job in the book industry was at Barnes & Noble as a digital sales lead. I took the job as I looked for other employment, but quickly fell in love with the world of books. I was recruited through LinkedIn to work for Follett, where I worked as a manager for two different college bookstores for five years. After leaving that position to become a stay-at-home dad for a little over a year, I saw on Facebook earlier last year that a local store was looking for a new owner. I ran right in and got the process started to buy the store.

What do you love most about being a bookseller?

I love being involved with the community. I’ve worked on a number of political campaigns over the years. I view bookselling as having all of the positives from campaign work, without all of the negatives of working in politics.

What do you love most about your bookstore?

The relationships I’m able to build with our customers.

What are you listening to right now?

Shortest Way Home by Pete Buttigieg

What audiobooks would you recommend or are among your favorites?

I’ve really enjoyed listening to some of Stephen King‘s more epic novels. I just don’t recommend falling asleep while listening to them…super weird dreams.

Where / When do you listen to audiobooks?

I listen to audiobooks when I’m driving, doing the dishes, folding laundry, mowing the lawn. Basically anytime I have a chance to throw my earbuds in.

What is your favorite thing about audiobooks through Libro.fm?

I love supporting a company that supports local bookstores.

What do you do when you’re not selling books?

Read books. Trying to write a book. And raising two little book-loving kids.
